My daughter, call her Chris, is dating a boy in her class. She has never had great grades, and now, all of a sudden she is making straight A’s. This is not a regular occurrence with my daughter. And she is spending most of her free time with her boyfriend. I think he’s doing all her schoolwork. What should I do?
Dear Mom,
Have you asked your daughter if her boyfriend is in fact doing her schoolwork? Is there the possibility that he is a good student and influencing your daughter accordingly? Since she has been dating him have other more studious peers come into her circle of friends? Sometimes peers can have a very positive effect on people in their group. If you want to find out what is going on you are going to have to investigate. I suggest making an appointment with her teachers explaining to them your concern and see if they have a similar concern. If no one seems able to explain this phenomenon then natural consequences will have to take over. If he is doing her schoolwork she will probably fail her tests/exams. If he isn’t and she is studying more effectively due to his influence then I would expect better grades.
