Healthy Alternatives to Favorite Summertime Treats

Fuel your kids with healthier variations of their summertime favorites by trying a few of the recipes below. For a special treat, throw a few these together and head out for a picnic. Of course, make sure foods are age-appropriate.

Skip the chips and try one of these trail mixes:

Sweet and Salty:

2 cups whole grain cereal (the lower the sugar the better)

1 cup raisins

1 cup dried cranberries

1 cup sunflower seeds

1 cup almonds

1 cup dark chocolate

2 cups air-popped, plain popcorn

1 cup Annie’s Cheddar Bunnies (found near Goldfish)

1/2 cup dry-roasted peanuts

1/2 cup sunflower seeds

1 cup pretzels

Better Breakfast:

1 cup shredded wheat (or try the organic version found at Walmart)

1 cup almonds

1 cup dried bananas

1/2 cup dried blueberries

When the weather gets hot, instead of heading out for popsicles or ice cream, make a yogurt parfait. You can find organic, vanilla yogurt at just about any local grocery store. For extra protein, go greek. Next, add some fresh (frozen works, too) strawberries, bananas, and blueberries, and top it all of with granola. Head to the Farmer’s Market or Paris Bakery for some great, healthy granola, or try making your own with the recipe below.

 8 cups oats

1/2 cup honey

1/2 cup canola oil

2 tsp vanilla

1 tsp cinnamon

Warm honey in the microwave for 40 seconds, then thoroughly blend all ingredients, except oats. Once blended, stir in oats. Spread evenly in a pan and bake at 300 degree for 20-30 minutes.

And instead of packing sandwiches on white bread, try 100% whole grain bread or head down to Paris Bakery and try their multi-grain bread. You can also use whole-grain pitas. Try filling your sandwiches with one of these tasty combos:

  • Hummus and shredded carrots
  • Cream cheese and cucumber
  • Cream cheese and spinach
  • All-natural peanut butter and banana slices
  • Cheese and avocado
  • Turkey and avocado
