I’d like to begin this article with a quote from a professional actor & Folk singer named Chris Burke who is best known for his character Charles “Corky” Thacher on the television series Life Goes On.
“Having Down syndrome is like being born normal. I am just like you and you are just like me. We are all born in different ways that is the way I can describe it. I have a normal life.”
Burke has been the Goodwill Ambassador for the National Down Syndrome Society since 1994. Like most individuals with Down syndrome or Trisomy 21, Chris is living a wonderful life of putting smiles on the faces of every person he passes.
On Saturday October 20th, 2012 The Red River Valley Down Syndrome Society held a Reach Rally in order to raise expectations and create hope (R.E.A.C.H.). Hundreds of people flocked to North Lamar Stadium in Paris, Texas for a day full of good times and team spirit! The teams represented were
Jordan’s Pedi Pacers
Reachin’ For Rain
Kaitlyn’s Sparkling Krystals
Every team rallied together as a unit to raise funds for the Red River Valley Down syndrome Society, and had a blast with the carnival style games and bounce houses. The NL Panther Mascot was on the field showing support along with Sparky from the Paris Fire Department. Home Helpers provided hot dogs and East Texas Broadcasting set up to support the cause. It was an exciting and educational day of charity and we are proud to live in a community that pulls together for a mutual endeavor like this.
The tremendous out outpour of community contribution went to a New Parent Outreach Program, Medical Outreach/Training Program, Educational Conference, Parent Support Group, Parent Training, and Social Events for Members. The teams that raised the largest amount for the cause were awarded trophies and the winners were..
3rd Place – Team Ava
2nd Place – Autumn’s Army
1st Place – Katelyn’s Sparkling Krystals
We had a chance to talk with Katelyn and her mother Krissy Crites and they couldn’t have been happier as they were enjoying the beautiful day dancing with friends and loved ones.
