Festival of Pumpkins Cancelled While Zombies Walk On Despite Rain
By Nicholas Murillo
The early morning hours showed promise this weekend in downtown Paris for the 13th annual Festival of Pumpkins. Each year the City of Paris Main Street gathering opens Saturday at 9:00 a.m. with a wide-ranging schedule of events that includes everything from pumpkin decorating, a pet parade and pet/owner look-alike contests to pumpkin pie judging, chalk art, costume contests, and Kids Midway games, with live music slated to play from 10:00 a.m. to the festival’s close at 6:00 p.m. Several local vendors and various businesses from across the area set up their booths and trucks along the Culbertson Fountain. The square’s shops and restaurants opened in anticipation for the large crowds that attend each year. By 10:30 a.m. thunderstorms moved in and had vendors packing up. Although the Festival was cancelled due to rain, the 3rd annual Zombie Walk began as scheduled at Margie’s Closet 138 Lamar Avenue (the old YWCA building) with a Zombie costume contest at noon and the Zombie Walk at 2:00 p.m. Participants traveled from as far as the Metroplex to show off their creative make-up and zombie impersonations. Winners include: Wyatt Easley, Christian Bush, Callie Riddlesperger, Jeff Cochran, Derik Spangler and Angie Whipple. The event raised $4,500 to benefit local organizations Meals on Wheels and Dylan’s Drivers. The Plaza’s own Paris Community Theatre also continued as scheduled and opened as a Haunted Theatre, showcasing “The Legend of Annabelle” from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The PCT Haunted Theatre will open again on Halloween night from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. General admission is $3. For front-of-the-line access, a Fast Pass is available for $10.
